Despite the fact that as Americans, we live in one of the most prosperous, and abundant countries on planet earth. The real TRUTH is the fact that as rich and abundant as we are, right here, right NOW poverty and hunger is at an alltime high.  Many are homeless, and each night go to sleep hungry. The sad thing is believe it or not, is that one-quarter of America's food is thrown away unsold every year.

Each year, billions of dollars worth of food is moved from store shelves directly into dumpsters.  While this happens, over 38 million Americans suffer from hunger or live on the edge of hunger.  In 2005 (the last year for which numbers are available), more than 25 million persons, the majority of them women and children, used the services of a soup kitchen or food pantry.  Another six million sought HELP but had to be sent away empty handy.  In Clay and Duval counties, Florida, an estimated 20,000 persons, including almost 8,000 children recieved emergency food that year.

The disconnect between abundance and NEED occurs despite the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996 which provides uniform national protection to those that act in good faith to donate, recover, and distribute excess food.  In Florida, Chapter 786 of The Florida Statutes also specifically provides immunity from civil liability to food donors and volunteers acting on behalf of charitable organizations that rescue food.  

Arlington Faith Center / C.F.
